Tibor was a Hungarian Jew born June 18, 1929. At 13 he was thrown into Mauthausen Nazi concentration camp and told this is where you are going to die. At 15 he was liberated by Patton's Army at which time he felt he owed a debt and if he could get to the United States he would become a GI Joe. He got to the U.S. and finally got into the Army on his 3rd try, with a little help, after failing miserably the first two times.
The Korean War broke out while he was in infantry training under a very Anti Semitic first sergeant. Tibor's Captain told him that he was not a U.S. citizen, it was not his war and he did not have to go. Tibor told the Captain that he trained with these men and he was going with these men.
Tibor and his unit were some of the first boots on the ground led by the Anti Semitic first sergeant. The first sergeant kept sending Tibor on dangerous missions he knew he wouldn't come back from, but Tibor was not smart enough to go die. He kept coming back.
Tibor Rubin was put up for the Congressional Medal of Honor
not once, not twice but four separate times.
Over half of the CMOH earned during and after World War II
have been awarded posthumously.
Because of Antisemitism
he received his medal some fifty-five years late on
September 23, 2005.
